Non-Dairy Yogurt: The Ongoing Hunt

Non-Dairy Yogurt: The Ongoing Hunt | ZonteeHou.com

For the most part, I don’t miss animal protein (meat and dairy) at home. I still eat meat and cheese when I’m out, but because I’m more conscious of my consumption, I like to think that I’m eating less outside of the home too. However, I do miss the convenience (and tartness) of yogurt every once in awhile.

Because of this, I decided to keep my eyes peeled for some non-dairy cultured yogurts, whether that featured soy, coconut milk, or almond milk. What surprised me was just how limited the options are—even in a city like New York, where people are extremely health conscious, and you can find just about anything food-wise. I often find the single-serving cups in one or two fruit flavors, but I couldn’t seem to find plain non-dairy yogurt.

So when I spotted Nancy’s Cultured Soy yogurt at the Food Co-op (which I was visiting for the first time with my friend David), I was very excited. Unfortunately for me, it’s still a sweetened yogurt. (I guess “plain” to them doesn’t mean what it does to me.) On the upside, it’s a very decent soy (and brown rice) yogurt, and I’d honestly take it (if it were available at any of the other, non-membership-requiring health food stores around me) over the fruit types.

In the meantime, I guess I’m going to have to continue to contemplate making my own yogurt.
