Save Your Food Scraps & Compost

Save Your Food Scraps

Thousands of tons of food scraps go into landfills each year in America. Here in NYC, it composes 17% of our waste stream. This is a total shame, considering that all of that organic material could go back into the earth to help us grow better trees, flowers, and food-growing plants.

I’ve been composting for two years now, but even if you don’t want to do it at home (or don’t have the room), most urban centers now have compost drop-off points at their farmers markets. Even suburban areas are getting in on the action. All you have to do is stick your food scraps in a container (I like to use a plastic leftover container) in the fridge or freezer (so it doesn’t start to smell) and then drop it off once a week.

If you’re in NYC, just go to GrowNYC.org to look up your local farmers market and its drop-off times. Drop off your food scraps once a week and be happy that you’re helping to return all that organic matter to the earth.
